Click to read why GES ArenaKleen is the best way to suppress Arena dust

Controlling dust in an equestrian arena is essential to protect rider, trainer, spectator and horse health. Small particles of dust (PM10, PM2.5) lodge in the lungs and can travel into the bloodstream to accumulate in vital organs such as the brain and liver. Over time, COPD, Silicosis, and other ailments may result.

There are several products and approaches to controlling dust in an equestrian arena.

Many indoor, covered and outdoor arenas simply apply water regularly to reduce dust. There are a few drawbacks with this approach. First, water and time. This approach uses a substantial amount of precious water, and hundreds of hours of time over a calendar year. Moreover, the footings are sloppy wet when initially applied, gradually drying back into an ideal state, and then getting dusty and loose again later in the day.

There are low-cost additives such as Magnesium Chloride (e.g. MAG Flakes) that function by absorbing moisture ("hygroscopic"). All hygroscopic additives require watering, just less of it since they hold onto moisture. They will also desiccate your horses hooves. If you doubt this, talk to your farrier or vet. Moreover, you'll still be watering regularly and the footing feel will vary by moisture content at any given hour or day. Chlorides are water soluble, so will wash away in outdoor arenas and require re-application after any significant precipitation. And they are toxic to plants & wildlife plus corrosive to metals such as your drags and tractors. Many municipalities have banned use of chlorides for these reasons.

Finally, there is ArenaKleen® from Global Environmental Solutions. ArenaKleen comes as a ready-to-use liquid and resembles olive oil but is not a vegetable, nut, or petroleum-based product. It is an engineered product to suppress dust. It binds into your sand footings permanently, making your footings appear damp even though they are dry.

ArenaKleen is non-toxic to people, horses, pets, plants, fish and wildlife. It is not hygroscopic, nor corrosive, and never requires even a drop of water. It does not evaporate, nor runoff substantially with rain. This makes it suitable for outdoor arenas, as well as indoor and covered. Your footings will maintain the same feel throughout the day, and throughout the year. ArenaKleen does not freeze at earth temperatures, so the footings remain consistent even at high elevations and northern latitudes in the Winter.

Over time, airborne fugitive dust, dried/ground manure, and micro-shear from riding action will accumulate new dust particles. So depending on these factors, and your threshold for airborne dust, most facilities will re-apply at some point. Normally for outdoor arenas this is once-annually though some go 18-24 months between applications. For indoor facilities, 2 to 4 years is a more common application interval. Since ArenaKleen persists indefinitely, subsequent applications are typically at 50-60% of the initial application rate.

ArenaKleen is not an inexpensive product, but it is the best equestrian arena dust suppressant. And considering the alternatives it is a great value for both private and public arenas.

Dust control refers to the methods and products used to prevent airborne dust from becoming a safety hazard, environmental issue, or regulatory problem. In industries such as construction, mining, energy, and agriculture, managing dust is essential for maintaining air quality, protecting workers, preserving equipment, and minimizing environmental impact. With rising concerns over pollution and sustainability, modern dust control has evolved far beyond spraying water. Today, high-performance products like waterless dust suppressants, organic dust suppressants, and non-toxic soil binders are leading the way in environmentally conscious dust management. The Purpose of Dust Control At its core, dust control is about stabilizing surfaces—typically soil, gravel, or sand—so that fine particles aren’t released into the air. These particles can pose serious health risks, damage machinery, and lead to fines from regulatory agencies. But not all dust control methods are created equal. While water is often used, it’s inefficient, short-lived, and wasteful, especially in arid regions or during dry seasons. That’s where eco dust suppressants come in. What Is a Dust Suppressant? A dust suppressant is a substance applied to surfaces to prevent the release of dust. Advanced formulations such as DustLess® and DirtGlue® are designed to bind fine particles together, locking them in place and preventing lift-off caused by wind, traffic, or equipment. Unlike water, a waterless dust suppressant does not evaporate or require constant reapplication. It provides long-term dust control—often lasting weeks or months—while saving time, money, and resources. Types of Modern Dust Suppressants Today’s leading solutions prioritize performance and safety. Here's a breakdown of the most effective options: Waterless Dust Suppressant: Eliminates the need for frequent watering. Ideal for remote sites or drought-prone regions. Organic Dust Suppressant: Derived from natural or biodegradable materials. Safe for use around crops, animals, and water sources. Non-Toxic Dust Suppressant: Free of hazardous chemicals. A safer choice for workers, nearby communities, and the environment. Eco Dust Suppressant: Combines durability with sustainability. These products support environmental compliance while delivering industrial-strength performance. The Role of Soil Binders in Dust Control A soil binder is often used in tandem with dust suppressants. It’s designed to stabilize loose soil, reduce erosion, and create a hardened surface that resists wind and traffic. Products like DirtGlue® and DustLess® function as both dust suppressants and soil binders, forming a resilient layer that stays intact even under heavy use. Common applications include: Unpaved roads and access paths Construction sites and staging areas Mining roads and haul zones Solar and wind farms Military and remote airstrips Stockpile capping and slope stabilization Why Environmentally Friendly Dust Control Matters Choosing an environmentally friendly dust suppressant is critical in today’s regulatory and ecological climate. Non-toxic, organic products help reduce your project’s environmental footprint while ensuring compliance with EPA and OSHA standards. Whether you're working near residential areas, protected habitats, or sensitive water systems, using eco-conscious dust control products is the responsible and cost-effective choice. Conclusion So, what does dust control mean? It means protecting people, property, and the planet by managing airborne dust in a safe, efficient, and sustainable way. Whether you're working on a rural road, a solar farm, or a construction project, choosing the right dust suppressant—especially a non-toxic, waterless, and organic one—can make all the difference. Explore solutions like DustLess® and DirtGlue® from Global Environmental Solutions to take the next step in responsible dust management.
